Study re-evaluates the phylogenetic position of the crocodile “cuckold”, today extinct
A study led by scientists from the American Museum of Natural History has resolved a long-standing controversy over a crocodile “horned” extinct that probably lived among humans in Madagascar. Based on ancient DNA, research shows that the cuckold crocodile was closely related to crocodiles “Real”, including the famous Nile crocodile, but on a separate branch of the crocodile's family tree. The study, published today in the journal Communications Biology , contradicts the latest scientific thinking about the evolving relationships of the cuckold crocodile and also suggests that the ancestor of modern crocodiles probably originated in Africa.
